Jack the Ripper Walk

THE JACK THE RIPPER TOUR.

DARE YOU WALK IN HIS SHADOW?

MEETING POINT: ALDGATE EAST UNDERGROUND STATION.

OUTSIDE THE TOYNBEE HALL EXIT.

THIS IS SITUATED AT THE JUNCTION OF COMMERCIAL STREET AND WHITECHAPEL HIGH STREET.

Richard Jones is able to present "a detailed and perfect account of the more historical complex theories... I doubt whether any other guide in London ...could have done this. The tours that Richard Jones leads are excellent..."

Martin Fido, co-author THE JACK THE RIPPER A - Z.

The name Jack the Ripper conjures up vivid images, of narrow Victorian alleyways and dark, creepy thoroughfares where a sinister figure stalks the night shadows in search of his unsuspecting prey. His name is famous throughout the world, and yet nobody knows for certain who he was, or even what became of him.

On this, the most atmospheric of all Jack the Ripper Tours, we abandon modern London to venture into streets that have changed little since 1888, when the Whitechapel Murderer's reign of terror sent waves of revulsion, shock and horror coursing through the neighbourhood.

Led by either author Richard Jones - writer and Presenter of the acclaimed Ironhill Pictures drama documentary "On the Trail of Jack the Ripper;" historical adviser and major interviewee for The History Channel's "The Hunt For Jack the Ripper," and contributor to the documentary that accompanied the DVD of the Johnny Depp Jack the Ripper film "From Hell" - or one of a handpicked team of Jack the Ripper experts, this is the ONLY Jack the Ripper Tour to start right alongside the narrow, cobbled alleyway in which the first supposed murder occurred.

Stepping from the rush of modern Whitechapel, and passing beneath an ominous 19th century arch, you are immediately transported back to that long ago era of gas lit terror. Within moments you are standing alongside a crumbling gateway where you are asked to close your eyes and picture the scene at around 3.40am on 31st August 1888 as the body of Jack the Ripper's first victim is about to be discovered. Suddenly a loud blast from a police whistle shatters the silence, and the hunt is on.

Through the menacing shadows you go, following in the footsteps of the Victorian police as they track Jack the Ripper through a teeming warren of sinister backstreets. You visit the murder sites as well as having the chance to hear the evidence and draw your own conclusions about the murderers identity. And, to help you build up a true picture of what the area was like, you will be shown original Victorian photographs of the streets through which you pass. Of the crime scenes, and even of the poor, unfortunate victims themselves.

You will be led step by step through the so-called "night of the double murder" and see the doorway where Jack the Ripper left his ONLY clue. You will hear how the police, that night at least, came close to catching him, and learn of the intriguing series of events and police blunders that led to his slipping through their net. We will discuss whether or not the authorities could have done more to catch him; consider the politics and social conditions of the day and even ask the crucial question, was there a government conspiracy to keep the Ripper's true name from being made public?

Finally, as the shadows fall and silence descends upon the neighbourhood, we will stand outside the one building that it is almost certain that Jack the Ripper visited. There, as the modern age creeps back upon us, we will unmask the Whitechapel Murderer.

So join the experts on a Jack the Ripper tour that is filled with mystery and intrigue, and venture into the darker recesses of the Victorian metropolis where every step takes you closer to solving this baffling, yet fascinating, murder mystery.
